I started by researching books, fishing magazines, TV shows, and watching underwater Salmon videos. I subscribed to WFN World Fishing Network on cable, 24 hours a day fishing from around the world. I watched every Salmon show I could find, from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Northwest. I began comparing the two, I noticed that West Coast fishermen almost always used Herring and Anchovies (live bait), not spoons or plugs like Great Lakes fishermen did, even though they have always been available to them. More importantly, they could catch as many salmon with four lines, as we could catch with twelve lines, using spoons and plugs. I watched Charley White’s video “In Search Of The Ultimate Lure” filmed out of Vancouver B.C. over and over. It was awesome. Then it hit me, they have always known something we did not. If properly done, nothing out fishes live bait! Most West Coast Salmon experts said a Whole Herring Rig would catch more Salmon than cut plug Herring or strips, but was the most difficult to master. I knew right then I had to figure out how to make a lure work like a Whole Herring Rig
Being a life time tool and die maker and entrepreneur minded I set out to design a lure that would work just like a Whole Herring Rig. I built countless proto types of every conceivable design and watched the behavior of salmon striking my lures on my underwater camera. I got he shape by scanning a real Herring on my computer, then had my shop cut them out on a CNC laser cutting machine. This new lure was a spoon made out of aircraft aluminum because it would be light, strong, and would hold it’s shape. By slightly bending the arc of the lure, the fisherman could adjust the roll like a real Whole Herring Rig.
